Section A
1 Read the passage given below and answer the questions that follow:
1. The bald eagle or the American eagle is the national symbol of The United
States of America. The bald eagle is a raptor or a bird of prey. Raptors such
as eagles, owls and hawks catch and eat small animals or other birds.
2. Early American pioneers (people who transformed the wilderness in the
USA into settlements) felt that birds of prey need to be destroyed because
they ate birds, fish and animals that were food for the settlers. During
World War II, the pesticide DDT was used to treat typhus and malaria,
saving thousands of human lives. In the 1940s, farmers across the United
States began spraying DDT on vast acres of crops to kill insects and other
pests. DDT affected the raptors seriously. DDT caused the shells of bald
eagle eggs to be too thin for baby eaglets to hatch, causing eagle numbers
to decline.
3. Eagles were eventually placed on the endangered species list. DDT was
banned in 1972 because of its negative impact on the environment. Slowly,
the number of eagles and other birds increased. Since 1985, the American
Eagle Foundation has worked with the Dollywood Theme Park at Pigeon

was an absolute fraud. He only spoke of these views from England to
Manaos. He was tall, skinny and had a stringy figure. He could be characterized by a few peculiarities such as his careless attitude towards
his attire, absent mindedness in his habits, and an addiction to smoking a
short hair pipe.
Lord Roxton was twenty years younger than Mr. Summerlee. In his ways,
he was extremely prim and proper, dressed with care in white suits and
high brown boots, and shaved at least once a day. His knowledge of the
world, especially South America was amazing. He had tremendous belief
in the possibilities of their journey. He spoke little of his own exploits in

palm as his landmark. The secret opening was about half a mile on the
other side of the river. There was no break in the trees. The thick
vegetation met overhead into natural tunnel and throughout this tunnel
of greenery flowed a marvellous river. They made their way down this
river for three days. However, on the third day they bid their canoes
farewell as the river was growing shallower.
